In the 1960s, she met future husband Bernard Chenowith in therapy when she was working as an intern. They married in 1967 and had two children: Brenda and Billy. In the 1970s, the Chenowiths had become controversial for allowing their daughter to undergo testing by the controversial Gareth Feinberg, who later wrote Charlotte: Light and Dark about their daughter.
They had an open marriage and separated briefly in 2002 when Bernard admitted to having an affair. They later reunited and renewed their wedding vows but Bernard succumbed to cancer in early 2003. Following this, she moves on and begins dating art teacher Olivier Castro-Staal.
